Frequently asked questions about LEXETTE Foam

These are some of the top questions we hear from people who are thinking about starting LEXETTE Foam. We hope these answers help. If you don't see what you're looking for, we encourage you to talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What is plaque psoriasis?

Plaque psoriasis is a skin disease that typically causes raised, red lesions covered with silvery white scales. These lesions, or "plaques" as they are usually called, can sometimes be itchy or painful, and can even crack and bleed.

Plaque psoriasis is a chronic condition, which means it will never truly go away, but you may notice that there are periods where your skin improves before symptoms return again. When they do return, it’s called a "flare-up."

What causes plaque psoriasis?

Plaque psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system. Normal skin cells mature and fall off the body in about a month, but the immune system of a person with plaque psoriasis speeds up the skin’s growth cycle, so new skin cells develop in only 3 to 4 days.

Instead of falling off, these cells remain on the skin where they form thickened patches (lesions or plaques).

What is LEXETTE Foam?

LEXETTE Foam is a prescription corticosteroid used on the skin (topical) to treat plaque psoriasis in people 18 years and older.

What makes LEXETTE Foam easy to use?

LEXETTE Foam comes in an elegant foam formulation that’s light and airy. The foam is not greasy, and it dries quickly without leaving any residue, so you can finally say goodbye to the stains on your clothes and bed sheets. It’s also easy to apply and spread on areas of your body with or without hair and on larger body surface areas.

What is the active ingredient in LEXETTE foam?

The active ingredient in LEXETTE Foam is called halobetasol propionate in 0.05% strength. Halobetasol is a corticosteroid that doctors have been prescribing for years. It is considered a more powerful steroid compared to some others. Powerful steroids are often chosen because they work fast on flare-ups and tougher plaques. Though their effectiveness is impressive, it's important to know topical steroids should only be used for short periods of time.

For the full ingredient list, please see full Prescribing Information and Patient Information Leaflet.

How well does LEXETTE FOAM work?

Since LEXETTE Foam is a powerful corticosteroid, you should expect to see results pretty quickly. In fact, in 2 clinical studies it was found that 5x more people treating their moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis with LEXETTE Foam (compared to vehicle foam with no active ingredient) achieved clear or almost clear skin after 2 weeks.

What are common side effects of LEXETTE Foam?

In multiple clinical studies, the most common side effects people experienced were:

  • Burning, stinging, or pain to the application site
  • Headache

In most cases these side effects were mild in severity.

And remember, your doctor is the best source of information for you about these things. So talk to your doctor about any side effects that bother you or do not go away.
